Today I must bust a myth about S.M.A.R.T goals. If you are a SMART goal kinda gal, you definitely wanna read this email. Even if you are not, it’s important you read this because you might unknowingly be using parts of this framework in your goal setting and it could be hindering your success big time.
Here’s a refresher on what a S.M.A.R.T goal stands for.
S: Specific
M: Measurable
A: Attainable
R: Realistic
T: Time-bound
Let me clarify, not everything about the S.M.A.R.T. goal framework is bad. Having goals that are specific and measurable is just fine and dandy because you need to know specifically what it is that you want and how you will know when you have actually achieved it.
The framework starts to crack like a broken glass with the concepts of attainable, realistic, and timebound.
Let’s run through them now.
ATTaINAble
Here’s the trouble with the “attainable” concept. Thoughts become things and creation starts from within first. You do need to believe you can achieve the goal in the first place and what you think you can do matters more than you realize. Whatever you tell yourself is what you will see play out in your reality.
The thing is that when you are setting a goal, you are setting it from the person you are at that very moment.
You are creating the desire with all your current paradigms of the person you are at that state in time.
This means, you are setting your goal from your current identity, beliefs, stories, habits, and behaviors of the person you are now. And not all of these are good like fresh baked cookies straight outa the oven.
Reaching goals requires growth at a soul, mind, and sometimes physical (body) level. The more you grow in these areas, the more you will be able to achieve. I say set goals that are a big stretch for you right now and that you believe if you do the inner and outer work, there is a possibility you can achieve them.
Realistic
Sooo many problems with the “realistic” category.
I mean, what if these inventors thought their ideas were too unrealistic:
The Wright Brothers-Creators of the first airplane
Alexander Graham Bell-Inventor of the telephone (My teenage would have thanked him immensely!)
Vinton Cerf and Bob Kahn-Inventors of the communication and protocol system for this little thing we call the Internet! Crazy to think that if it weren’t for them doing their thing we might not be connecting on this lovely virtual space today.
Time-Bound
No one can predict the Universe (Sorry to all the psychics out there, let’s be real though…even if you are one, you know you are not always right!)
Think back on the things you manifested in the past. Did they turn out specifically as you thought in the exact order and exact time? I think not.
That’s all I need to say on this one. 🙂
If it is in your heart to be, do, or have something, the desire is born within you for a reason. Think about it, why would it be there otherwise?
The Universe is not a tease.
So go for that desire you’ve been dreaming of, even if right now it seems like a huge stretch for you and you don’t know how or when it will happen.
If not S.m.a.r.t goals, then what?
Instead of setting S.M.A.R.T. goals, or using the goal method you’re used to, (and especially if you never set goals) why not try out the complete goal-setting framework inside of the Higher Self Planner Journal? I’d love to know your thoughts on it and what insights and transformations it brings to you.
Comment below and let me know if this resonated with you.
Sending you ALL my best,
